Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILTY: Prevention of injuries, Application of first aid Treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries Provide sound health information

 

ADMINSTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITES: The Athletic Trainer shall: Conduct and supervise a student athletic trainer program. This would include instruction and supervision in: first aid and CPR techniques; protective taping, wraps, bracings and dressings; use of therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation techniques. Develop an athletic training budget that will maintain an adequate supply of expendable and non-expendable items. This program will include a current inventory of all equipment and supplies that will be reported to the appropriate administrator on an annual basis. Maintain records of first aid care and treatment records of athletic injuries.

 

STUDENT SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES The Athletic Trainer shall: Be responsible for the prevention of injuries to include: Being available to assist in the selection of protective equipment. Reporting and /or correct physical hazards. Being available to assist coaches in the design of a year-round conditioning program. Applying protective wraps, tape, dressings, braces and guards as deemed necessary or as prescribed by a physician. Conducting rehabilitation programs to help prevent re-injury. Being available to use knowledge of exercise physiology to help coaches conduct safe and effective practice sessions. Be responsible for applying first aid to new injuries to include: Applying first aid techniques as needed. Arranging for emergency transportation as necessary. Providing first aid equipment and/or coverage for visiting teams as required. Maintaining records of first aid rendered. Rendering immediate decisions on the playing status of players injured in a contest or practice. In the absence of a physician, the decision of the athletic trainer will be final. Be responsible for the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to include: Conducting treatment and rehabilitation at scheduled times. Conducting regular clinical hours. Maintaining contact with referring physicians, Maintaining records of progress for treatment. Advising coaches when athletes may participate in practice or game following an injury or illness. Be responsible for providing necessary information to the athlete regarding personal health habits which include: Encouraging proper nutritional habits for athletes. Promoting the concept of total physical fitness not only for the sport but also for a lifetime of active living. Counseling athletes in seeking proper medical assistance for follow-up care and/or surgery. Providing sound advice on matters of drugs, ergogenic aids, tobacco, rest, drinking, etc. Be responsible for covering all high school athletic practices and events before or after the regular school year including occasional weekends and breaks.
