ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Meets and instructs the students(s) in assigned locations and at the designated times;
- Teaches on-road driver education skills based on the Driver Education Curriculum Guide in Virginia as assigned by the driver education coordinator;
- Maintains accurate records of on-road driver education activities as prescribed by the driver education coordinator;
- Assists the driver education coordinator in teaching basic driving skills on the driving range;
- Assists the driver education coordinator in maintenance of driver education vehicles and range equipment;
- Assists the driver education coordinator in the design and setup of skill areas on the driving range;
- Ensures the adequate supervision of students;
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
- Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
- Communicates with students, student counselors, and parents through conferences and other means;
- Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees, and student activity sponsorship as required;
- Reports all accidents and/or potential hazards to the building administration immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible;
- Maintains licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date;
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
- Performs related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of driver safety; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain proper standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and possess or be eligible to acquire appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board. Candidate must possess at least four (4) years of driving experience. Must complete Department of Education approved training as follows:
- Basic Driver Education - 48 clock hours (including multi-media instruction and evaluation);
- Methods of Teachers - 48 clock hours (including in-car instruction). Additional hours will be required if the aide is to teach multiple-car range or simulation;
- Inservice biennially.
(Note: Special exception exists for those "grandfathered" by the State DOE)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License. Candidates must have 3 year driving record upon which the Division of Motor Vehicles has taken no corrective action immediately prior to approval. Candidate must be able to meet the criteria to be on the NCPS approved driving list. Candidate must possess good moral character.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom and throughout the division in behind-the-wheel county vehicles. Frequent walking, sitting, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Frequent and regular travel in county owned vehicles is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, road and weather related hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide drivers education instruction and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with staff members, administration, and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person may be necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities by building administrator(s).
