SUMMARY:  Help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

 1.  Coaches in the Nelson County Public Schools shall be employed to teach in specific teaching assignments within the system.

      They must possess the required teaching endorsement(s) and meet minimum requirements for teacher applicants.  Teaching is the primary assignment and coaching is a supplemental assignment without tenure.  In the event a coaching position cannot be staffed by a teacher employed to teach in the system, the superintendent may recommend employment of a coach to fill a vacancy following guidelines in the Virginia High School League Handbook, Section 27-2-2, "Coaches Rule Exceptions".

    The Nelson County School Board on recommendation of the division superintendent shall employ coaches and shall dismiss coaches when delinquent, inefficient, or otherwise unworthy.

 

 2.  It shall be the goal of the school system to have Head Coaches teach at the school where they teach their sport.

 

 3.  It is highly desirable that a head coach in a sport have some training, either as a player or a coach in the sport, or will have some special interest in the sport.

 

 4.  A coach is expected to display loyalty to the school system and its athletic philosophy.

 

 5.  A coach shall exhibit an interest and support for both the sports that he or she coaches and for the entire athletic program.

 

 6.  Coaches are expected to display a positive attitude and to work cooperatively with other members of the coaching staff and the school administration.

 

 7.  Coaches are expected to encourage academic proficiency as well as athletics.

 

 8.  It is the coach's responsibility to develop a positive disciplined attitude on their teams.

 

 9.  It is the coach's responsibility to develop an attitude of good sportsmanship on their teams.

 

10.  It is the coach's responsibility to develop the athletic potential of each member of his/her team.

 

11.  Head Coaches are expected to organize and supervise assistant coaches and student assistants.

 

12.  Each head coach shall execute sufficient pre-season planning to ensure that the program has a successful beginning, starts on time, and is properly terminated at the end of the season.  This includes a satisfactory written inventory to be filed with the principal and athletic director (where applicable) and facilities left in a reasonable condition acceptable to the principal and athletic director.

 

13.  Coaches are responsible for the security of gyms, locker rooms, storage rooms, and other facilities related to their sport.  This includes before, during and after practice and games.  This includes securing main building doors and outside gates if custodians are not on duty.

 

14.  Coaches are responsible for supervision, preparation, and maintenance of locker rooms, gyms, athletic fields, equipment, uniforms, and all other facilities related to his/her sport.  Coaches are responsible for supervision of staff and student personnel and care of vehicles when traveling to and from games.  This includes returning vehicles in a clean, undamaged condition.

 

15. Coaches are expected to see that their facilities are kept clean.  Unsafe, nonworking equipment, and unsanitary conditions relating to facilities used, are to be reported to the building principal.

 

16.  In cooperation with the principal (athletic director, if sport is located at Nelson County High School), coaches are responsible for managing their teams' finances.

 

17.  Varsity coaches are expected to help organize and carry out the activities of the varsity club. JV coaches are encouraged to participate in club activities.

 

18.  Coaches are required to attend meetings of the athletic department and coaching staff.

 

19.  Coaches are expected to attend banquets, picnics, and other awards or social activities relating to their sport.

 

20.  Coaches shall attend required Virginia High School League meetings to certify the athletes eligibility and to submit Virginia High School League's eligibility list to other schools and to the League Office, on time.

 

21.  In addition to these duties, coaches are expected to carry out all other reasonable assignment and activities relating to his/her sport and the athletic department, as delegated by the principal or athletic director.  In addition to these general responsibilities, specific responsibilities for each sport are listed by title.
