SUMMARY

Services school board owned vehicles to provide for safe transportation of all students.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Services and inspects all vehicles on a scheduled basis following the #1 Virginia State Department of Education required operating days maintenance protocol. 
  1. Performs inspections and services vehicles on a 180 operating day schedule following Virginia State Department of Education inspections #2 protocol. 
  1. Makes minor adjustments on repairs based on inspections. Repairs that cannot be performed in the service/inspection station will be referred to the repair station on a work order request. 
  1. Installs and repairs tires as needed. 
  1. As needed, assists Mechanics in the repair section of the garage to perform vehicle repairs. 
  1. Maintains up-to-date maintenance and service records on all vehicles inspected or serviced per DOE requirements. 
  1. Assists in maintaining an inventory of parts, products, and supplies needed to service vehicles. 
  1. Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping in all work areas. 
  1. In emergencies, serves as a substitute school bus drivers. 
  1. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Supervisor of Transportation may from time to time assign.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Have sufficient physical and mental ability to safely operate a school bus and/or perform required job tasks.
  2. Furnish a driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles showing that within the previous five years he or she has had no convictions for a felony or for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and has not been assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program; has not been convicted of more than one moving violation or assigned to attend any driver improvement programs within the past 12 months and has no charge of reckless driving within the previous two years.
  3. Have a valid Virginia Class B CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements with air brake certification or must obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  4. Successfully complete the Nelson County Public Schools bus driver training course. (Returning mechanics must be retrained if the time elapsed since last employment with Nelson County Public Schools exceeds five months.  This also includes returning from extended sick leave, leave of absence or Worker's Compensation, whose leave time exceeds five months.)
  5. Have a physical examination of a scope prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education. The results of such examination shall be reported on the prescribed form and certify that he/she is physically able to perform job requirements.  A physical examination is required upon initial employment and thereafter prior to the beginning of each new contract year. Successfully take a tuberculin test upon initial employment to prove tuberculosis free.
  6. Pass alcohol and controlled substance tests on initial employment and thereafter submit to periodic, unannounced, random alcohol and controlled substance tests throughout the calendar year.
  7. Must possess or be willing to obtain a Virginia vehicle inspection license through the Virginia State Police within 6 months of employment.

 

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A person may not drive a school bus unless he or she is physically qualified to do so and has submitted a "School Bus Driver's Application for Physician's Certificate" signed by the applicant and the doctor for the applicable employment period.
  2. A person must pass the mental and physical requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia as set forth below:
  3. Has no loss of foot, leg, hand, or arm which interferes with the ability to control and drive a school bus with reasonable accommodations.
  4. Has no impairment of the use of a foot, leg, hand, finger, or arm or other defects or limitation likely to interfere with the ability to control and safely drive a school bus with reasonable accommodations.
  5. Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus currently requiring insulin for control.
  6. Has no current clinical diagnosis of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, coronary insufficiency, thrombosis, or any other cardiovascular disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive cardiac failure.
  7. Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of a respiratory dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to control and drive a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.
  8. Has no known current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with the ability to control and operate a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.
  9. Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuromuscular, or vascular disease, which would interfere with the ability to control and operate a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.
  10. Has no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of epilepsy or any other condition, which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or any loss of ability to control and operate a school bus safely with reasonable accommodations.
  11. Has no mental health, nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with the ability to control and operate a school bus safely.
  12. Has both distant and near visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.
  13. First perceives a forced-whispered voice in the better ear at not less than five feet with or without the use of a hearing aid, or if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard Z24.5-1951.  Personnel who wear the hijab (headscarf) for religious reasons must take the hearing test with the hijab in place.
  14. Does not use an amphetamine, a narcotic, or any habit-forming drug without appropriate physician supervision.
  15. Has no current clinical diagnosis of alcoholism.
  16. Must be able to successfully complete all the following agility tests;
  17. Climb and descend the front steps of a 64-passenger bus without pausing.
  18. Open and close manually operated 64-passenger bus entrance doors without difficulty while seated in the driver's seat.
  19. Activate the brake pedal with the right foot in 3/4 of a second or less after removing  the right foot from the throttle pedal.
  20. Move from a seated position in the driver's seat of a 64-passenger bus to the rear of the bus, open the emergency door and exit the bus, all within 20 seconds.
  21. Operate the driving controls using both arms simultaneously and quickly.  For example, activate master panel switches or shift gears while keeping one hand on the steering wheel of a 64-passenger bus traveling 25 miles per hour.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
