SUMMARY: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable and clean place in which to learn, play and develop.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
1. Assists in keeping building and premises, including sidewalks, steps, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
2. Regulates heating systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
3. Shovels and/or sands walks and steps as appropriate.
4. Checks daily to insure that all exit doors are open and panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
5. Sweeps or vacuums (walls, ceiling, boards, desks, blinds) assigned areas daily and dusts furniture.
6. Assists in cleaning corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
7. Scrubs and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
8. Washes assigned windows as needed.
9. Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, trimming,, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
10. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
11. Makes such minor building repairs as he/she is capable of making.
12. Reports major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian and/or principal.
13. Reports immediately to the principal or his designee any damage to school property.
14. Remains on the school premises during assigned work hours and during non school hours, when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the principal.
15. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
16. Assists in keeping an inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements from the principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodians in their duties.
17. Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
18. Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
19. Complies with all procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
20. Inspects the building(s) often and reports to the principal or his designee any conditions involving safety and health.
21. Assists in the inspection of fire extinguishers on a regularly scheduled basis.
22. Performs such other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as the principal or his designee may from time to time assign.
23. Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve month year - 260 days - 2080 hours
Grade 5- Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
