SUMMARY

Performs any combination of following instructional tasks in classroom to assist teaching staff achieve teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  (Other duties may be assigned.)

 

 1.  Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.  Tutoring is included in this.

 

 2.  Scores and records such achievement or diagnostics test as the teacher recommends for individual students.

 

 3.  Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interest, and abilities.

 

 4.  Guides work set up and assigned by the teacher.

 

 5.  Serves as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.

 

 6.  Alerts the regular teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student.

 

 7.  Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully certificated teachers.

 

 8.  Participates in in-service training programs as are appropriate to assigned job.

 

 9.  Duplication and lamination of papers; organization of materials; cut and paste, etc. to develop classroom materials as directed.

 

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. (Small groups or 1-1 assignments; aides certified staff in supervision.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or its equivalency and completion of an approved nursing assistant course with a Virginia State Certification. One year of experience as a Certified Nurse Assistant and successful completion of at least 20 semester hours of college credits preferred. Must be certified in Basic Life Support and Basic First Aid. Some experience working with school age children in a public or private school setting is preferred. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks. Must have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Good knowledge and understanding of child growth and development. Some knowledge of the instructional goals, policies and procedures of public schools is helpful. Must have considerable patience and ability to work effectively with children, young adults and faculty members. Must have the ability to assist in the implementation of health services programs for children and to maintain health records in a confidential manner.

 

Must be willing to take and pass the PARAPRO Assessment Test administered by the Educational Testing Service within 2 year of employment.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

EVALUATIONS Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Support Staff.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Ten month - 1170 hours -Support Staff Salary Scale.  Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
